Frank Lloyd Wright was the first architect to appear on the cover of Time magazine, in 1937#Wright, who was married three times, had to leave the United States in 1909 because of an adultery scandal. His first wife was murdered five years later by their butler#For most of his life Wright was short of money. In 1932 one of his creditors in Wisconsin became so exasperated with the erratic architect that he broke Wright's nose in an argument over the $380 debt#Wright inspired the novelist Ayn Rand to write her best-seller about an architect, The Fountainhead, published in 1943 and later made into a film starring Gary Cooper#The office interior Wright created for Edgar Kaufmann (the Pittsburgh clothing store magnate who also commissioned. Wright's famous Falling Water house) is now on permanent display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London#"The physician can bury his mistakes," said Wright, "But the architect can only advise his client to plant vines."#Wright was in some things always a nineteenth-century man. He deplored television, which he is reputed to have described as "chewing-gum for the eyes"
